Drove here yesterday after deciding the south coast with its wind, cold and rain were not worth staying for. Much better here and we brought forward our trip to Doubtful Sound to today. Woke at 6.15am, clear skies, the Southern Cross clearly visible but cool. Went to the harbour for 7.30 and boarded at 8. Trip across Lake Manapouri tok about 50 minutes. At this end we spent some time avoiding a plague of sand flies before boarding a bus for a trip underground to a power station capable of supplying all of South Island's electricity. Doesn't sound very exciting does it? But it was. Then another boat journey of about an hour to Deep Cove, the start of our voyage to Doubtful Sound. Deep Cove is the start of a fjord leading to the Sound. Quiz question: What is the difference between a fjord and a sound? The trip was stunning, the scenery is amazing. There were original plans to film Jurassic Park here and it is easy to understand why. I have selected a photo to attach but I have so many and it may not be the most impressive. Wildlife included some more fur seals, a couple of crested penguins and some bottle nosed dolphins. The cruise took us out to the Tasman Sea and back and we arrived back here at camp just before 5. Tomorrow we are planning to drive to Queenstown before continuing up the west coast.

Laura & Andy Looks pretty damn impressive to me!! A: Fjords are formed depressions near the sea, that have been scoured by glaciers. Sounds are formed from running liquid water. How's Mum getting on with all these boat trips?? Does it feel like you're halfway through the trip yet? Can't believe it's going so fast!! Andy had to buy you some more logs last week :0)
