Mike & Benedict's World Adventures
Hello once again people,
Here's the story of Hanoi. A brilliant city, with some good night life and i think think the fact we stayed in a really nice hostel helped.
On the evening we arrived we didn't do much except get some food and a mandatory beer, then watched a film on the roof top with two English girls - Gemma and Sam, who we became friends with over the next few days and will hopefully be seeing them later on our travels.
The drinking got messy on the second night, the bia hoi (6p a glass, still can't believe it) followed by a bar with shots and eventually a club was never goning to be a pretty picture at the end. I found myself wondering the streets in the drizzle turning down prostitutes of both sexes despite the promise of it being good before finally stumbling upon some locals on mopeds and after 30mins of sign language and talking louder so they would understand I got a lift to the lake and from there it was easy.
The next day was spent doing nothing except a little shopping and lunch with Gemma and Sam after helping them move hotel. That evening the drinking continued as Chelsea were playing and what started off with 4 of us ended up with about 15 people around our table as Wilson (a guy from the hostel) asked everyone who was within shouting distance to join us e.g. the whole bar. It was a multi-cultural experience including french, norwegian and the finishing touch of a Danish lesbian or carpet muncher as Wilson so politley shouted across the bar when he found out. Another good night out in Hanoi.
The decision of getting up early to see Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the B-52 wreckage, the temple of literature and a museum seemed a good idea the previous night however by midday and a little self-reflection this probably wan't my best idea ever. The sights were worth it though (we didn't make the museum - getting lost for 40mins saw an end to that).
In the eveing it was time for the water puppets, altough a must do thing in Vietnam (the show consists of about 12 scenes and lasts for 45mins or so) it kind of goes on after the first scene. The Man Utd game cleared my head after the busy day as we trounced Newcastle. Finally Bed.
The next day we did as little as humanly possible, and we watched Munich (60p from a shop). We're now off to Ha Long Bay for 3 days so i'm sure there will be another entry soon.
By the way to cross a road in Vienam you just close your eyes and go - the traffic dodges you. If you can dodge traffic, you can dodge a dodgeball.
