Mike & Benedict's World Adventures
Well the journey from Thailand to Malaysia was a mission to say the least. It goes something like this.....
Ben and myself decided we would get a bus to Hat Yai in Thailand (which is the main transport hub) so we could try and get a direct bus from there to the Cameron Highlands as the Cameron highlands are half way to Kuala Lumpur. We left early and were in Hat Yai by the afternoon, so we set off in search of a Bus operators office. After wandering around for 30mins (with our backpacks) we decided to get a moped to the local TAT office (tourist information). We agreed a price with the driver however he took us as suspected to one of "his" bus operator offices. After a big arguement with him as he had not taken us to the agreed destination and him threatening to call the police if we didn't pay - as we were at the "TAT office" (The closest i've been to wanting to smack someone) we walked off to find the TAT office.
To our dismay (we later found out it was a public holiday)all the buses were full going to anywhere in Malaysia at the 5 different bus companies we tried. They finally managed to get us onto a bus going to buttersworth where we hoped to get onward transport to the Cameron highlands. It being a holiday it took us 3hours just to cross the border control and when we were in Malaysia we hit big traffic jams - our hope of catching a bus that evening to Cameron Highlands faded as the hours passed.
We arrived at the bus station at 11pm and as suspected there were no available buses that evening so we booked the first available bus in the morning and set off in search of a hostel which we found at a reasonable price (let's just say the room had character - with a concrete floor and a bath tub at the end of our beds, oh and a tube for a shower, we didn't care by this point). Down at the bus station in the morning we went to the booth and asked where we should get the bus - where we were promptly told we missed it, i looked at my watch it was 8.15 the bus was supposed to leave at 8.30. After some very bad english i finally realised what he was saying - Malaysia has daylight savings and Thailand doesn't it was 9.15. This meant buying another ticket for the 10.30 bus at an ever so slightly reduced rate.
We finally reached the highlands in the afternoon and booked up a trek first thing the next day and tickets to Kuala Lumpur in the afternoon (time was running out to reach Singapore after the wasted day). The tour in the morning was spectacular - the sights were amazing and the mossy forest fun (but very muddy) plus our tour guide was a legend who knew pretty much everything about local stuff and also took us to a Buddhist monestray where he explained bits of his religion. By the evening (7pm) we were in KL in our new dorms.
First thing we met an Irish fella called Chris and on his information Wednesday was one of the best nights to go out in KL - he was right. We found an Irish bar where we had a laugh and watched the news of a Tsunami warning in NZ (fortunately it never appeared as we will be there in the not too distant future) before hitting the beach club where we stayed until closing. The next day was spent sight seeing at both the huge towers in KL after a McDonalds breakfast. I had put all my clothes in the wash and therefore spent the day in the blistering heat in my jeans and top i had worn the previous night - i bet i smelt good. We also got a lift off a Malaysian guy to the petronas towers after Chris asked directions as he was heading that way (we had already been walking for 40mins by this point). A visit to the bridge at the Petronas towers and observation deck at the KL tower were the order of the day. We also managed to fit in the cinema to watch Mission Impossible 3. All in all another top day.
That evening we jumped on another bus and were on our way to Singapore.
