Again the taxi driver at the station tried to get us to go to a hotel that his friend owned but i had found the Rainbow hotel in our lonely planet which was apparently in the middle of the town and so i made him take us there. He drove us to another hotel and because his english wasnt very good got a receptionist to come out and made her tell us that all the hotels in this area were very expensive and full up, and the place he was suggesting was really nice. I could tell she wanst very happy about having to do this so i told her we'd risk it and got our bags. As soon as hed driven off she said she was full but a little hotel down the next side street might be open!
The hotel is run by a middle aged couple and their family, and they were lovely. The room was 200 dong a night (8 pounds). It was huge, had a balcony big bathroom, tv and everyday they cleaned the room and gave us fresh towels!
We went down to the beach as our tans have been fading at a rapid rate over the last few days. I had completely run out of suncream and nobody sold anything under factor 50 in Saigon, anyway i managed to find a little street seller who sold 15 and we set off. The sea is really rough and very windy, and we were getting sand everywhere so we vowed to find a pool for the remainder of the trip. When we got back to the room we realised we'd both burnt as well (wind burn i reckon!). We went out that night for a really nice Pizza and then to the bars in town. Met 2 really nice American guys from Seattle. One of who worked for Bill Clinton when he was President, anddid not appreciate any Bill Clinton jokes i chose to make!! Vietnam unfortunately doesnt sell "buckets" we have npw been downgraded to Jam Jars which is slightly dispapointing. Anyway we soldiered on and got in about 4:30am!!
The next day we both felt pretty ill, and sunburn hadnt gone down so we stayed in bed and watch Tv all day! it was like being at home on a Sunday!
I found a public pool in my lonely planet so we decided to go there the next day.
The pool is lovely and has a bar and restaurant which sells the nicest cocktails called love apples.
Went Diving on Tuesday morning. Was ok. The sealife isnt very exciting here so we didnt see anything new and the sea is very cold. Did a see a huge grouper fish though (as least 1m long, they are generally 15cm or a foot!). The intructor was Vietnamese and didnt speak any english so we had a Finnish DM translating! He was nice though.
Have spent the rest of the week sunbathing and chilling out as it has been quite hectic since we left Thailand. Although our Visa run out on March 10th so we need to be in Laos by then!
The next stop in Hoi An which is a little village up the coast. There is no train station there so we had to get a aleeper bus. The guy told us the beds were very comfortable, and 2m long and 1m wide. I think he must have been using a Vietnamese ruler as the beds are about half that size. Someone dad's size would have been in agony after 12hrs on there. I barely slept and was so glad when we arrived in Hoi An at 7am the next morning!
