After breakfast and a mile, Barbara and I joined Rob and went into Montevideo to find Norman and Lynda who knew a decent wine shop. Al & Lesley were with them. At the bar, restaurant, shop the other four did a wine tasting while the three of us bought 7 bottles of Tannat between us. One for Rob, two for Barb to give to her new man and four for me! I’m taking two home and I intend to drink the other two sometime during the cruise. A quick visit to Frog (a supermarket, as I’m sure you know) for some beers and water for the cabins.
Then it was back to the ship to drop off the (heavy) wine and a cuppa. Back to Rob and Linda’s cabin to collect the lady herself and then a challenge. We pooled our Uruguayan currencies (which were more than yesterday as we’d converted our remaining Brazilian this morning) and sallied forth to spend it all. This involved a couple of large bottles of Patricia beer and a Sprite in the bar we hit late last night. Then we found a restaurant after a few hits and misses, including a hotel with a rooftop bar and desperate manager.
In this restaurant, Rob and I demolished a bottle of Tannat (notice the theme here?), Linda had a Coke and Barbara (lightweight that she is) had water. A couple of plates of fritas between us and we still had money to burn. So it was off to another wine shop, where we found the Tannat we had with last nights dinner (the biggest steaks I’ve ever seen and the best garlic mushrooms). So a bottle each for Rob and me. The final task was down to the girls. Get rid of 180 pesos. They did it by buying crisps! Mission accomplished, it was back to the ship for tea and cookies.
In Horizon, the ships daily newsletter, it said that martini’s were on special at £5.95. As Michael is a fan of these cocktails, he decided to partake in the offer. After three, he looked at the menu. Standard price was £6.15. Doh!
We were rubbish in the Syndicate Quiz.
All in all I’d forgotten what a nice little country Uruguay is. An excellent couple of days in a beautiful country.
