Port Stanley is a notorious port for missing a call because it’s a tender port and because of the wind and waves. Luckily we were able to get in. I’m so glad we did as I had an excellent day.
It was quite rough on the tender ride and the weather was quite cool. On arrival in the town, we were split up into minibuses and a couple of miles out of town further split into fours and allocated a 4x4 for each quartet. Our four were Barbara, Yvonne, Luke and me. Our driver was Dick. Then we had a hilarious and exhilarating off road trip to Bluff Cove, which we remembered from the war. Our visit was more peaceful though. We were there to see the penguins. There were three or four hundred Gentoo’s, both adults and teenagers. Gentoo’s are the third biggest penguins. There were also a few King penguins with their babies which were still downy. They won’t fully fledge until the end of the year. Then it was another bumpy ride back to the minibuses.
Back in town Barbara and I had a look at the Victory monument and Government House before having a sandwich and hot drink. We then walked back to the jetty to check in for our afternoon tour of the battlefields. Rob, Linda and Phil were also on this. We saw the terrain that some of the war was fought over and mountains like Tumbledown and Harriet. Then another stroll through Port Stanley to the jetty for a long wait for the tenders. An excellent day in a place I never thought I’d visit.
Today is Australia Day and the evening quiz was about .......Australia! There were two teams of Aussies, but we won, with 18/20! We started the Syndicate Quiz on -1 and put in an abysmal performance. Out of the four questions we couldn’t agree on, we always opted for the wrong one!
