Travel, travel, travel!!! Today our day consisted of, yep you guessed it travel! If we weren't waiting for a bus, we were on one!! 5.20am our day started with a quick walk to the bus terminal. We threw our luggage onto the bus and then jumped on!! This bus was a class ahead of the chicken buses, purely by the fact that we had fabric seats and no chickens!! Where the air con should have been there were nothing but holes, just to give you a taste of what you are missing! So we created our own old school retro air con....we opened the windows!!
The first trip was about 4 hours!! It should have been 3 hours, however I think it took the bus driver 1.5 hrs to work out how to change the gears!! I still think half of the gear box is sitting in the middle of a Honduran road somewhere!!
The locals also weren't too happy that they had 2 tour groups on the bus taking up all of the seats! It's the first time I have felt on this trip that the locals weren't too friendly!!
The second trip was another 3 or so hours. It was great seeing the spectacular mountainous backdrop as we drove from town to town!! The clouds looked so ominous over the mountains!! However we had another hot day, no rain today (thank goodness).
Once we arrived at the bus terminal we jumped in taxis and made our way to the ferry!! Now the Honduras taxi drivers are a pretty crazy breed!! Nothing quite like a tailgating taxi driver that over takes an overtaking car on a blind bend, all this with 'Night fever' blasting from his stereo!! Brilliant!! You couldn't even dream up this stuff!!
We then caught a ferry to Roatan Island. This took about 1.5hrs. You know it's going to be an interesting sailing trip, when your tickets come with a seasickness tablet!! I didn't need to be told twice... I couldn't swallow that tablet fast enough!! I was a little sleepy on the ferry, but I didn't feel sick!! The ride was a bit choppy, and I did get that really cool feeling in my tummy a couple of times when the boat went up and down!!
We finally arrived at the island and piled all of our bags into a taxi, and were driven to our hotel!! By this stage it was 7.15pm. Well over 12 hours of travelling completed!! We had a quick 5 mins to throw our bags into our rooms and off for a beautiful dinner!! Finally I managed to find some steamed veggies!! God they were good! Along with a beautiful fresh piece of sea bass.... Mmmmmm delicious!!!
We then did an orientation walk around the Main Street of the island, and finished with a very yummy frozen yogurt and watching the lightening off in the far distance!!!
Great to know that the island is safe!! The guards don't need guns here.... No they carry machetes!!! I'm feeling safer already!!!
