Last night at 11 pm after about an hour of searching on the internet for somewhere to go hiking and after Aline had fallen asleep mid search, I decided that we were going to take a chance and head to an area called Sierre. We didn't know much about the area but I was sure we would figure something out. The internet showed some hiking so we couldn't go wrong. We got up early and were on the train from Geneva at 7:30 on our way to sierra. (2.5 hr train ride) This time I posted some pictures of the train ride to give you an idea of the scenery. On one side the Lac Leman and on the other, vineyards going up the mountain side. It was overcast and rainy today but still very impressive to see.We arrived in Sierre around 10 ish and immediately went to the tourist office to figure out our day. Not what we had expected. The guy was trying to convince us to stay in the area and do a nice little walk to see the vineyards. Pffff, we wanted to get to the Alps, where there was snow. We kinda just set out without a plan. As we began to walk through the village, we noticed an abnormal amount of men in spandex. It seems there was some sort of race going on but it wasn't until I saw a group of Canadians that we learnt what the race was. They told us it was the world championship mountain race. Basically they run up a mountain for 12km. We then decided to follow the path that they would be running and began making our way up the mountain. It was really cool because the village is surrounded by mountains and the mountains are covered with vineyards. We were basically hiking through the vineyards amongst the grapevines. We finally got 2km into the course and the race was set to begin so we decided to stop and watch things unfold. Keep in mind it took us an hour of walking to get this point and we didn't believe that they were going to actually try and run up it because it was seriously steep. Sure enough you could see the little ant like figures making their way up the mountain through the grapevines and then past us at the top of a slope. Not a fun experience watching them. At this point it has been 10-15 min and they have been running up steep slopes and as soon as they get to our slight plateau at one of the steepest areas they are drooling and spitting, almost frothing at the mouth. I almost let it rip and puked in the grapevines...that would have been an interesting bottle! When they finally pasted, we started back up the same course and slowly made our way up the mountain until we found the funicular. The funicular brought us to a plateau on the mountain where the race had ended and the ski slopes begin. Unfortunately the weather wasn't very good and there was no point in going to the top with the gondola because it was all clouded over. We sat and had a tea and then watched the awards for the race, then headed back down the mountain on the funicular.
