We re-entered France via Andorra and the Pyrenees. We took the main road through Andorra and drove the entire length of it, all 56 kilometres of it. It took us up into the snow covered mountains of the Pyrenees, but we were lucky, the sun was shining and it was 6°, the scenery was breathtaking. Julie and I just love the Pyrenees mountains, they are just stunning. We continued heading north to Millau to have a look at the worlds tallest bridge. Opened in 2004 the Millau Viaduct is a very impressive sight to see and an amazing piece of engineering. After looking at it we decided to pay the toll and ride over it, just to say we had. Getting accommodation is really starting to become a problem now that winter is on its way, in Millau we tried 8 caravan parks and two hotels before we found a hotel open, we hope it doesn't get any worse in Italy. We then visited Nîmes where we saw old Roman architecture dating back 2100 years and the best preserved Roman amphitheater in the world, truly amazing. From Nîmes we had planned on going through the French Alps to Nice via Col de Restefond, the highest through road in Europe, but it was closed because of the snow, so we had to settle for Col d'Allos, it was only around 2200m with snow and ice on it. The views were breathtaking and the road very tight and narrow. As we rode into the alps the temperature hit a new low for us, 0°! We stayed in a hostel in Nice that was right in the middle of the old city, down a street barely wide enough for a car to fit down. We spent two night and one day there. We found Nice to be a pleasant place, but couldn't really understand why it rates so high for so many people. There was certainly a lot of VERY expensive yachts in the harbor. We nearly spent the night in a local park when they locked all the gates on us while we were still inside, but after trying four gates we found one that was left unlocked. Julie wasn't keen on sleeping on a park bench.

Mum / Marion Good one Mike. You keep finding more and more places that excite you ! I'm with you Julie ! sleeping on a park bench indeed ! Not keen on the thought of it being so very cold. Hope you have your thermal undies !
Janet McIntyre Interestingly close call with the park! I've looked at your pics before reading the blog. Usually I do it the other way around. Those Alps really would be beautiful to glide through on the bike.
