MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
At about 3.30am we apparently entered the Sognefjord . The Sognefjord is the largest fjord in Norway, and the third longest in the world. Located in Sogn og Fjordane county, it stretches 205 kilometres inland to the small village of Skjolden. One of us, for some unknown reason is up taking photos and the other one of us is woken up to view the photos! Not happy Jan!!!!!! At a much more civilized time like 6am we are awake again and the scenery from our verandah is amazing. It's so peaceful and calm. The water is crystal clear and a gorgeous turquoise colour. We find out later in the day that the Eurodam and in fact no ship the size of the Eurodam has ever docked at the tiny port of Skjolden. We were the first ones to test the sea walk floating platform that extended out into the fjord and enables the ship to float towards it to allow us to disembark with out the use of tenders. Skjolden is a tiny village with just 240 residents and its right at the very end of the fjord. We don't have any tours planned so going ashore we are not sure what we will do for the day. The first thing we see is a young man setting up his display to offer boat rides out on the fjord in an IRB. Looks like it could be fun so we let him get set up and will go back in a little while. He thinks his first trip will be at 9.30am as long as he gets enough people. We walk over to the tourist office across a little bridge which goes over the rushing blue water. It is just so pretty and pristine. There are places to walk, waterfalls and look outs so we will do the boat ride to start with and go from there. We pay our money for the boat and he has a full boat because we have a large family group from Spain travelling on our ship and they all want to go on this boat trip. So we wait and wait until they all get organized and just when we are about to put on our polar suits, the Spanish group pull out Holy Carumba!!!!!! Luckily he has enough customers and we finally get going at 10,20. It's awesome. We see waterfalls , little villages with13th century buildings and hear stoties about the tunnels and roads and what happens in the winter. The Fjord freezes overand sat winter in particular they could drive their cars on it. The people in and around Skjolden are farmers. They run Scottish Highland cattle, sheep and Lamas. They are well known for the beautiful strawberries which are grown upright on a trellis and there are many many paddocks of them. After the boat we return to the ship for lunch and then we walk just over 8 km up and down the winding roads. We have spectacular views of lakes, the Fjords and waterfalls. The camera man is having a field day! Our feet are burning, it is another beautiful day in the high 20s. We go to the waters edge to dangle our feet. The water is freezing but there are people swimming. The water is just so clear and fresh straight from the melting snow on the mountain tops. Just over a week ago, there was still enough snow up there to ski on. It was a great day in Skjolden and we get to enjoy the great views of the fjord as we sail back out. It's hard to believe we could fit and navigate through these narrow passages. Alesund tomorrow.
