MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Alesund is the further east north that we will go and so we expect it will be cooler today. Not so however. The sun is shining and as per usual the locals are very surprised by this weather! We take the Hop on Hop off bus option this morning to get to a look at the city and surrounds. We have an afternoon tour booked to go to a couple of islands away from the city so this is the best choice for us. On the way up the mountain our double decker bus has to stop quickly as a deer jumps out of the bushes and crosses in front of us. Yay we have seen a reindeer in the wild! We stay on the bus for the whole circuit and get a good look around. We head back on foot to the town centre and a quick walk up and down the streets. Our afternoon bus trip is interesting as the islands are connected by under sea tunnels. There are 3 tunnels that are a total of 12km's long and up to 145m under the water level. One of our other stops is once again at the top of the mountain that we had been to in the morning. This time we get off the bus to take photos. As we sail away from Alesund we are fare welled by the firemen on their boat with a water salute and we are escorted out of the harbour by a pod of dolphins. As I am now sitting in our cabin writing this, we are completely enveloped by sea fog. It is difficult to see 10 metres out to sea. I am glad I am not driving! The captain keeps sounding the fog horn. Tomorrow we will be in the Shetland Islands and we really are expecting it to be cold and wet!
