MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
The approach to Bergen is through the Fjord lands. The coast line is rugged but beautiful. On arrival in Bergen as soon as we are able we leave the ship and head for the Funicular which will take us to the top of Mount Floien. We don't have to line up and the trip up the mountain leaves at 8.30am on the dot. On the top of the mountain the view of Bergen is breathtaking, the houses, the wharf and the fjord. It is so quiet and peaceful up there because it is still relatively early and not too many people around. There are many walking trails around the mountain, but you do need to be on the look out for Trolls.....the signs say so! We take the train back down, there is a walk but we choose to save our legs from the 400 plus steps. Along the wharf is a fresh fish market offering today's catch to be bought fresh or cooked to your liking so you can eat it there. The live crabs are gigantic and lobster in the tanks are biding their time until a buyer comes along. The streets are narrow and cobblestones. The best way to get around is to walk but you do need to be a mountain goat. Bergen survives on fishing, ship building, oil and tourism mainly. It's quite expensive, we paid about $20 for coffee and a bun and $25 for a beer and a coke. We do the tight **** thing of taking some fruit from the ship to snack on while out and about and having a salad or a sandwich when we return in the late afternoon. Once again it is a spectacular day. Apparently, according to a local shop owner, it was 8 degrees this time last week. We have been very fortunate with the weather but as we head further north, who knows. After a solid 7 hours of exploring the narrow streets, the Bryggen and the castle fortress, we return to the ship for some late afternoon R & R before 2 for 1 Happy Hour as we set sail. Just for something different we order dinner to our room. We are on the left side of the ship and as we are heading north this is also the west so we have the benefit of the sun which is still quite high in the sky at 8pm as we dine on our verandah and we will also see the sunset at about 10.30pm. It has been a beautiful day in Bergen. Tomorrow we are in Skoldjen.
