After a freezing bus ride from Jaipur we arrived in Agra, where we planned to stay for 2 nights and visit the Taj Mahal and whatever else the city had to offer.
Our luck in Agra was to meet Sabir The Tuc Tuc Driver, he showed us around for 2 days and was our very own personal guide and driver. It was great, a hassle-free stay in which our only concern was to bask in the beauty of the local monuments and survive the humid heat. Sabir also took us to see his house and meet his wife and 5 daughters, I think he fell in love with us after Davide and I sang Bella Ciao (a WWII Italian resistance song) for him in the back of his Tuc Tuc.
The Taj Mahal was everything I had imagined, stunningly beautiful, majestic and very very crowded but such a joy to just sit there and look at it. Part of the fun at the Taj was to observe the local tourist crowd, it's now mid summer here, most schools are closed and lots of people travel north for fresh air or to visit the country's attractions.
Few things to note
most Indians don't smile in pictures, they are dead serious
they skip the lines with amazing nonchalance
they are a super colourful crowd to look at in their sarees, turbans, veils etc
After 2 days we decided that it was time to travel north and look for fresh air, the only available transport was a bus to Dehra Dun (700 mt) to then proceed to Mussoorie (2000mt) with another bus. Little did we know this was going to be a nightmare of a trip, in a dirty, smelly, bumpy sleeper bus. But that's another story…
Next: Mussoorie
