Rather than muck up another day for everyone, trying the Hop On Stay Off busus which are useless with the wheelchair, we decide to trundle down to the river and see what we can see, leaving N+G to HO-HO on their own.
It's 32C as we head through the park to the Pest side of the river. We pass the boat station where tonight's cruise starts and on along the riverbank where a fresh breeze keeps us cool.
At the marketplace we cross the bridge to the Buda side and continue to the funicular station before crossing another bridge back to Pest. We are already in the square where we picked up the taxi yesterday, and just around the corner we find a nice terrace for a lovely salad lunch.
We continue meandering from riverbank to pedestrian areas and cannot resist another green melon ice cream in the same place as yesterday.
Our gentle stroll means we get much better views of the buildings, many very ornate and some with Arabic influence. But Budapest is a mixture of grandeur and grunge, and for every beautiful structure there are equal numbers of concrete slab ugliness and poverty. And as well as the usual city noise there are emergency vehicle sirens every few minutes.
What we also noticed was that all of the blue city buses were properly ramped, so with hindsight that would have been our better option yesterday.
We do our last stretch of the river bank and return to site via a small supermarket. At some point, probably one of the bumpy pedestrian/tramtrack crossings Nick loses his hat from the back of the chair.
Back at the vans Ali opens up to cool them down while she takes Cleo for a walk then we go inside for a lie-down to cool off.
In the evening all except Nick go on a night-time boat trip which, despite assurances that it was accessible, proves to have a stepped entrance. The boat trip starts with a welcoming drink and tours the river past the major bridges and landmarks, all brightly lit. Music is provided by a local saxophonist and the river is full of other sightseeing boats. The trip is just over an hour meaning it is nearly midnight by the time the tram ride returns them to site.
After yesterday's disappointments everyone has had a much happier day in Budapest today.
