We wake to the continuous whistle of an oriel. The 19C AT 06:00 rises to 30C by 10:00. Just as we are about to leave at 11:30 Sofia arrives for work so it is another round of goodbyes. Our route takes us north on the 5029 with panoramic views over the lush valley. We stop for fuel and spend our last few Kuna on ice-creams.
Soon we are approaching Slovinia. As we crest the top of a hill we see the sea, with a huge, flat area of pale ground below us. Winding down, on one bend we find ourselves in perfect alignment with a large runway, and a few minutes later we are almost alongside it.
At border control the Croatian officer opens one passport. 10 yards later Ali passes them to the Slovenian officer who passes them straight back without even looking at the covers.
Despite 32C and bright sun we are required to use dipped headlights. As we have found so often before, immediately we cross a border the scenery changes. Houses are a different shape, there are more cypress trees, roads appear busier.
We arrive at the camperstop in Izola, a large car park with 5 motorhome bays. €15 for 24hours includes electricity, water and dump. Surprisingly only one bay is taken and that is by another Brit. After lunch in the van, N+G take the bike and we wander into Izola.
There is a long promenade above a pebbly, rocky beach which is covered in sun-bathers. In places wooden decking is littered with inert, spread-eagled forms. Strangely, the sea here is a rich green but just as clear as we saw further down the coast. We stop for a cooling lemonade, served from the old style bar-top chillers with a glass tank and revolving lemons. Along the prom are huge plantpots with aged olive trees.
The far end of the prom leads to the port. A mixture of small wooden working boats and expensive sailing boats stretches across to the older part of town. Bright pastel plasterwork, shutters and gothic windows surround a little square leading to cool, narrow backstreets. In one of these we find a fruit market and buy some figs.
We meet N+G and on the bike and make arrangements for dinner. Unfortunately, the chosen restaurant has a limited menu and we are offered seafood or pasta. We select pasta, but despite offering 3 dishes, he can only cook two of them at once so it's all a bit farcical really although what we did have was quite good.
As we are eating a street theatre is setting up nearby so when we finish we go for a look. The costumes are gothic and the locals are all reacting but it's mumbo-jumbo to us so we leave them to it and head for the harbour hoping to see a sunset but clouds are building.
We make our ways back to the car park, chat to the other Brits, have a glass of wine and turn in.
