The birds start at 04:20 but we don't rise until 08:30. Amidst the meadow grass, poppies burst open in the morning sun. We have the last of the NaschMarkt melon for breakfast and enjoy the peace until we leave at 11:10. The temperature is already 22C.
Our journey starts across lots more flat farmland with poppies and cereals. Although the Danube is tantalisingly visible on the satnav it's a good few miles before we actually set eyes on it. We stop in a layby with glimpses of the river through the trees and have lunch. As we travel on we notice scores of car transporters laden with Suzuki cars from the nearby factory. In places the roads are quite agricultural, rough and deformed. There are a few minor delays; trundling behind a tractor carrying a load of manure, or perhaps some Vienna cheese, and another waiting for two trains at a level crossing.
Once on route 11 we see much more of the Danube, and there are hills in front of us and high, rock escarpments on the north bank.
There is the obligatory supermarket stop in an Inter Spar; steak, chicken, milk and veg are 9000HUFs , about £20
We stop again at Visegrad where there is a panoramic view of the Danube, and Ali, Grete and Nick W go down to paddle, to cool their toes in the 27C of warmth.
Half an hour later we hit the outskirts of Budapest and start mingling with a rush hour on steroids. The rule seems to be to do what you want, usually with a signal, and leave those following to react. Nick soon has the three flashes and change lane without mirrors sorted but the two vans get separated by traffic lights. No matter we are both programmed and we arrive just as Nick W has overshot the entrance. On the basis that 'last one in is a sissy' we turn in behind and enter the city centre campsite, on the 'pest' side of the river, first.
There is a bit of confusion about how busy the site is, have we reserved etc as there may not be space. Then Ali mentions the email correspondence with Owner, Josif, and we're treated like VIPs, checked in, no payment yet, and Josif has left a bottle of local red wine.
It's 28C as we pitch up at 17:50 and we all take time to chill out before starting our BBQ supper with our Hungarian wine.
