Checking out this morning was done with the same informality as yesterday, no paperwork, €15 paid cash and bye-bye.
We drive to Zadar and after a trip around the block we find parking on the waterfront, which is free on Sundays. A few yards down the road we enter through one of the old fortified gates into the pedestrianised area. Although there are similarities with Split, Trogir and the other towns, each has its own feel. Zadar is much more open, and the old buildings intermingle with the new. There are also numerous Roman remains, some in very good order, others beneath glass pavements and some just a section of a tower or wall. The forum is dominated by St Donatus cathedral and sections of wall with pieces of columns, capitals and friezes etc scattered about in a small park.
We get sandwiches from a sandwich bar and eat in the forum, then wander out to the sea front where there is a long promenade. The 'Yellow-Semi-Submarine' contrasts brightly with the blue water and yachts are sailing well in the good wind.
At the end of the prom is the famous sea-organ of Zadar, which we start to hear as we approach passing the black and white wooden benches arranged to resemble a keyboard. The organ is a series of concrete chambers which play different notes as the sea sloshes in and out. T reminds us of the sequence in 'Close Encounter of the Third Kind' when the humans and aliens start to communicate with pipe organs. Further along the promenade is the 'Greeting of the Sun', a large, circular solar panel that lights the whole harbour-side at night-time. Around the rim is a series of co-ordinates and dates relating to the churches of Zadar.
We return to the old town and look at more of the intricate carvings, faded frescoes and pink, plastered walls before heading towards the 'vans. On the way Grete realises she hasn't got her purse, so we retrace our steps, asking at the sandwich bar, looking around the forum and so on with no success. Grete finds a policewoman who takes her to the station but the inspector is not there so nothing can be done until 17:00. We return to the 'vans where a few phone calls gets everything cancelled then N+A go to find a nearby site for the night while N+G wait to see the inspector.
At 17:40 they arrive at the site; no inspector, no purse but relieved that the cards are secure and the lost cash was not excessive.
We have a relaxing evening, Ali cooks roast chicken and then we have another early night.
