We are all up early and leave the site at 10:00 to drive to nearby Orebic and buy our ferry tickets [156Kuna]
All along the harbour small cafes and restaurants are covered in bougainvillea.
The ferry arrives, we board and sail for 15 minutes to Korcula, capital of the like-named island. It's a short drive from the port, over a hill and down into the old town, where we find a car park. The attendant tells us 'no motorhomes', but when we show Nick's blue badge and mention wheelchair he says OK and tells us to park at the far end.
We wander around to the harbour and to a beautiful scene. The white stone wharf separates blue sea from a row of stone buildings with red tiled rooves and palm trees growing in front. Behind are the now familiar sandstone mountains, wooded lower down, bare at the top, with tiny, bright green vineyards clinging to the sides.
A slope leads us up to the old town where on our left is a stone wall overlooking the sea and on our right a series of craft shops and restaurants, punctuated by alleys leading up steep stairways to higher parts of town. Some of the buildings are adorned with stone brackets nd mouldings, their purpose not clear, bu Korcula is reknowned for stone carving.
We find a restaurant with a table looking over the wall out to sea. It is a bit cloudy today, so cooler but the sea breeze is warm as we sit and enjoy our meal. Afterwards we meander around this charming town before returning to the van.
Nick and Grete follow on their bike as we drive out to see a bit of the island. It is thickly wooded and hilly, but not particularly spectacular, but one unusual feature is the numerous small drystone shelters with stone rooves all over the place.
We had thought of camping here and getting a ferry to Split, but it's unreasonably expensive so we will return via Oribec, Trpanj and Ploce before wending our way up the coast.
We return to the port in time for the 15:00 ferry and are back on site thirty minutes later where we chill for the afternoon. Ali and Grete swim while the Nicks attend to a problem with Mary*Lou's horn.
In the evening Ali barbeques home-made burgers for supper. The temperature rises through the evening and we are all sweltering by bedtime.
