Seems everyone says things are "brilliant" here in England, even when it's raining!
The GPS now speaks the Queen's English again but we really didn't need it for the short trip to Bath. (in spite of Don's suggestion we did not run over it twice and resort to a map alone for the duration). Found our way to the River Avon & parked 2 blocks from the city centre. No Problem!
Touring the Roman Baths was interesting. The have done a good job of making the experience informative. Now if they could just find a way of making the crowds of teenagers on school trips disappear!
The city centre is quite pretty. Lots of parks, canal boats and quaint bridges. Someone went crazy with row housing here. Though visually stunning there are areas that look like the first Time Share experiment in Britain! I suppose when you have the only thermal spring in England there will always be entrepreneurs that take advantage of it, starting with the Romans or more likely the Celts.
Rain gear, umbrellas and comfy shoes and the two of us spent a few hours exploring.
Came back to Cashel through Bradford-on-Avon. The road takes you through beautiful rolling hills that the locals call mountains.
Today was a terrific day. We began by heading to Stourhead House. The gardens of this stately manor home are stunning! I think all country homes should have grounds with a lake, a gothic church, temple to Apollo, water falls, Palladion bridge, Pantheon, Temple of Flora, Islands, great vistas, swans and Canada Geese!
We did come to Stourhead because of a distant family connection. The only family to greet us were the Canada Geese and, yes, they are a nuisance here too.
The manor house was closed but later in the da we got a chance to tour Kingston Lacy, another home with family connections, but this one had no Canada Geese. Not as big a home it too was stunning.... in a heavy drapery, too many paintings, flowery wallpaper, lots of furniture & knick knacks kind of way! My thought was all the dusting they would have to do but of course they had 'people' for that. There was a room dedicated to Egyptian artifacts a sign of the gentry's early souvenir shopping.... these included an obelisk that one of the ancestors took a liking too and placed in the back garden.
Shane wanted his picture taken looking like the Lord of the Manor but the ball cap and rain coat didn't quite fit.
Between Stourhead and Kingston Lacy we did a side trip to Old Sarum, an ancient site just north of Salisbury. (Amazing to just drive b Stonehenge on our way... sort of "oh hello, been there done that".)
Sarum is a pile of rocky foundations dating back to the Romans and culminating in the magnificent castle of William the Conqueror. Why he picked that site I don't now but the views down to the Salisbury Cathedral are magnificent and in the other direction you can see military planes flying over their practice area. Seems like the Salisbury plains are still being used as a battle ground.
Now we have made our way to Swanage where we spend three nights in a self catering unit. What a terrific find. Close to the beach, quiet, clean and with everything we need.
In a follow up with the Hertz saga..... it seems they are very apologetic and because of a problem with the car we have, they are replacing it tomorrow. At least all the charges have been cleared up to both our satisfaction. The girl we dealt with on the internet has been right there for us.... don't know how we will be received in Heathrow when we return the car but... not my concern.
Now if I could just figure out how to drive on the left side!

Marge Groves Glad to see you are in Purbeck country! Thomas Hardy wrote about this area and the hiking is brilliant!
Celia I can picture it with a top hat and a snazzy suit if I squint hard enough!
Celia I'm with Don... I so would have thrown out the GPS and used a map, but you crazy kids like your gizmos!
