It feels so good to be here on the island just relaxing in the sun.
For me the hardest part about kayaking is the preparation. Even with my lists written and items crossed off, I still worry that I have forgotten something.
Once you take off in your kayak you are finally 'away'. What you have forgotten is forgotten.... and most of the time it is not needed. As long as you have food, survival supplies, shelter and medicine you can survive almost anything quite well.
Along with our one food bag we found out that we had left our weather radio behind. Joe was pretty disappointed because we had given him the job of checking the forecast. However, being on this side of the island we could get a pretty good visual at what was about to come down.
On this, our first full day on the island, it was sunny and warm. Three of us stayed on the beach reading, sketching and exploring while the rest went out to explore in the kayaks. We have decided to make this our base camp.
Wild waves crashing on the rocks sucking back to reveal orange and purple starfish, mussels, crabs etc all going about the business of living. Curious seals take time out from fishing to check out the strange kayaks.
The kayaks had no problem taking off and landing in the surf. Practice makes (?) perfect.... well it wasn't perfect but it was pretty good.
So today we have found a different kind of peace. It is such a privilege to share our knowledge with Carissa and Joe.... They are curious about weather, tides, animals, currents etc ... and we are pleased to share what we know with them.
Again life is good!
