Did the 444km to Ayres Rock past some nice red scenery. Got to the nearest campground, pitched up and headed beer in hand and chairs in the other to a viewpoint to see the sun set on Ayres Rock still 20km away.
It is complete blue sky here during the day. In the sun you can be warm enough in a T Shirt, shady areas however are cold. When the sun goes the temperature drops like a stone. We hurried back from the viewpoint to the tent to get electric blanket and fan heater setup. There is a monopoly here, the cheapest place to stay indoors here is five times the cost as in Alice Springs (300 dollars). The extreme heat in summer and cold in winter means they can get away with it. By tenting it and being comfortable we are effectively sticking two fingers up at them. We were warm - thank God.
