Mark & Den's Travels
The Yongala 1st May 2006 Sorry for all you guys who are not divers but this one needed a write up!!
The SS Yongala sank during a cyclone in 1911 with all loss of life on board. She was not found until 1958 amazing as she lies at 28mtrs rising to 14mtrs. An unforgettable Dive, We dived with Yongala Dive (strangley enough,) Out of Ayr what a dump that was but hey thats another story!! 40mins out on an Enclosed RIB to protect us from the weather and the rolling seas. We were the only boat on the wreck brilliant get kitted and overboard asap we have to descend by shot line the current is using us like flags. WOW we can see her lying on her starboard side from about 6-8mtrs I stop to enjoy the view its amazing down there. Once off the shotline we swim along her deck viewing all the amzing coral that has gathered over the years even black coral we havent seen any of that since Milford Sounds NZ. The life is just everywhere Giant potato cod, Barracuda, Angel Fish,Turtles, Morays, Super Maori Wrasse, We were left to our own devices we had 45 mins and no deco to allow ourselves the second dive time. Back on board we have fruit & Cakes I am so cold it feels like we were with you guys at Stoney!! but NO HOT COFFEE cause COFFEE is BAD!! Dive 2 just 1Hr later I havent warmed up since last dive, actually back in the water the sea is warmer than the wind chill. We stop on the shot for a view of the Shoal of barracuda hanging with us This dive we try to forget what going on around us and concentrate on the wreck no PENTRATION as she is considered a graveyard. wouldnt have done anyway!! We find the engine room visability not great because of all the glass fish hanging, next is the first class lounge you could still see the wooden floorboards around her bow and up to her port side up the hull where we find her name not big brass letters but it is there see photo of "A" working away back along her hull we find a port hole still closed and still intact Obviously Ashley & Claire havent been here yet!! We drop back over to her starboard side to find the loos no I didnt use them they are always the bits you have to find eh!!
We have to say goodbye we are 10mins into deco whoops!! sorry!! still enough to see whilst hanging and such beautiful viz one amazing day!! Thanks to the lads at Yongala Dive they also gave us a BBQ Aussie style on return and after Hot Shower & Hot Coffee. Wow!!
