Friday was our roadtrip. 2hrs 30min to Kisumu on the shore of Lake Victoria. My first observation is that Kenyan traffic is insane. Really insane. Indicators are used for anything other than indicating. Headlights are voluntary in the dark, and mirrors are for cowards. Add to this potholes, collapsing roads, mud and the total lack of street lighting it is a miracle I am here to report the experience.
In Kusumu we went to a hotel near Hippo point and booked a boat ride. We saw many birds but the real target was the hippos. Our guide took us to the right area and we sat looking at the brown water. We were rewarded by several hippos who popped up to see what was happening. We also saw a little baby hippo. It was hard to get an idea of the size as we only saw their heads but even so they were huge. After our boat ride we had lunch then went on to the antelope sanctuary. I will now list all the animals we saw in the day.
Baboon, monkey, lion, cheetah, zebra, water buffalo, fish eagle, leopard, ostrich, antelope, tortoise, hyena, people.
All in all, not a bad days work.
My last point is about water. We saw people collecting water from Lake Victoria and washing in the water and fishing. Firstly the water is brown, properly brown. I would not touch it let alone wade in it. The thought of having to wash and eat in it does not bear thinking about. Secondly Lake Victoria is a source of Bilharzia which is where parasitic snails get their offspring through your skin and then they grow in your bladder. I don't know all the details as we were eating at the time and they would not tell me in case I couldn't finish my food. Lets just say you don't want to catch this. There is an urgent need for clean water here. Its all the more shocking as we were sitting in a very nice resort with cool drinks, waiter service and swimming pool watching people collecting the water. It makes me think that there is something is badly wrong with the world.
