I should probably talk about the mud in Kimilili. The mud is incredible. It is very red and sticky and it covers everything. It is used in construction to build houses, to make bricks and to make roads. If used properly it can do all these things brilliantly. If it is not properly used for example the road is badly constructed then huge potholes from and the road becomes impassable in the wet. The mud is also incredibly fertile. You could plant a stick here and it would grow in to a tree in a year (no exaggeration). This is some of the most fertile land in the world, yet even here people go hungry. One of the most worrying things here is the felling of trees as they hold the soil in place. With out them the soil is washed away. This soil is the greatest asset of this place and it would be a disaster if it was lost. Good development work is needed to protect this place and to insure that the local people an take full advantage of it.
