Dreamland is not where you go when you sleep. Far from it. It is where you go when you are ill. It is also where Becky works. We were able to visit the Dreamland medical centre on Monday morning. Dreamland Medical Centre is a large building about 3km from Kimilili. It shares its grounds with a large primary school also called Dreamland. Becky gave us the full tour and we were able to see the new dental surgery and the different wards. We were also pleased to see Kiprop again and to talk with him there. The majority of the work at Dreamland is out patient and on Mondays it is the baby clinic. We saw a talk on weaning your child. It was in Swahili, but I like to think I learnt something. We also saw babies being weighed. This is the same as in England but it was awfully cute.
The lab technician showed us a blood sample with malaria in it. Dreamland do a community clinic in local villages twice a week. Because the diseases here are so often parasites only blood and stool tests can show a diagnosis. This means that the lab equipment is taken in to the community so that diagnosis can be done immediately. Often people do not return to the hospital or delay their visit so if the diagnosis had to wait until the samples were returned to the hospital very few people would get the help they need, but with the right expertise and equipment the local people can be treated quickly and effectively there and then.
The other challenge that faces the staff at dreamland is the road. It is a mud bath even on a dry day. We were able to walk back but after the rain later the road had become impassable to anything other than 4x4's or pedestrians. Becky and Jane were very muddy when they got back later. Claire and I went to the local shop to by phone credit and potatoes (and did a great job bartering) and almost fell over on the short walk up the road.
The other challenge today has been the Landrover. It was known there was a fault but when the mechanic looked at it today it was found that the baring had gone (shattered) at the back left and taken another keep part of the drive system with it. This meant that Simon had to drive to Kitale as this was the nearest location that could provide the necessary parts. This meant about a 7 hour trip but all the parts were found. With any luck the Landrover will be working again soon. This Landrover is key as it allows Jane and Becky to get to work and is also dreamland's ambulance and outreach vehicle. Mike and Becky are hoping to raise enough money to leave the Landrover here once they have left. It is very important and literally a life saver. If you want to know more or support this then do drop Mike and Becky a line and they can let you know more.
