We had an early start today so it was good. The plan was to take the METRO downtown - leave the car at our hotel and walk around Old Montreal. We drove to the Namur Metro stop and headed for Champ des Mars station which is pretty much in Old Montreal. But before we boarded the Metro we had yet another good lunch at Dunn's restaurant located adjacent to the Namur station.
The Montreal Metro system is a bit of an oddity - I'm pretty sure that in all the subway rides we've taken around the world, we've never been on one that runs on solid rubber tires. I'll give you that it's comfortable, quick and gets you where you want to be, but it's just a little strange.
We arrived in Old Montreal, again to glorious, hot weather which has continued to be a good thing on this adventure. Old Montreal is quaint, but packed with tourists from all over the world, they do have maybe just a little too much of the typical souvenir shops on the cobble stoned roads. Ian looked for just the right Montreal Canadians hat and finally found one in just the right style and size to impress his mates down under.
We toured the large Notre-Dame Basilica - but we were just a couple of years late for Celine's big wedding. The Basilica is imense. The construction of this stone church took pace between 1672 and 1683. Reconstruction was often discussed but it wasn't until 1823 that the church wardens approved the plans for the existing church. As the pictures show, this is a very, very pretty church and I'm sure one of the reasons that Celine decided it was just the right place to marry Rene.
We attempted to get on the Hop-On / Hop-Off bus, but a TWO-DAY charge was stupid so we decided to forgoe the city tour of Montreal in favour of the Metro ride home. It was Greek for dinner, and I personnally have to say that all the food was Excellent - Job well done Hercules (our waiter). We're off to Quebec City in the morning (about a 3 hour drive) and we've booked our accomodations for the next two nights so we're good to go. Hopefully you're enjoying the pictures and we'll check back with y'all when we arrive in Quebec City.
