Hey all, I realised that Cairns came in bits and pieces, so here's the story..
The resort (def more of a resort than a hostel) was a little out of the centre but made up for it in other ways.. it had a pool side bar, bbq area, big screen playing movies every night, a pool- which i went in once on the first night and nearly drowned so didnt dare near again.. a lounge area, and a kitchen. the dorm rooms were fairly basic but its who you with that matters.
I made a little family there, my two young boys, Jack and Tom and my two Irish boys, Shane and Kev who were my dorm buddies for 2 weeks. And yes it did get a little boy smelly. and of course Dan who just randomly showed up one night and showed me the town. Dan was my very own tour guide.
Cairns town is nice, it has a big lagoon, a marina, a shopping mall and loads of bars and restaurants. I went shopping nearly every day ( I bought a pair of silver heels- yay!) and then out nearly every night to the infamous Woolshed, where you litterally dance on the tables. And not just me- everybody! They did an amazing $10 deal- steak dinner, beer and desert!
Most of my time I spent shopping. But I did do a couple of adventure trips, we went to the rainforest, and apparently there's a lookout there where you can see the spot that Steve Irwin died. Also did a road trip with the Irish boys to Caldwell and Shane injured his back jumping from the top of a water fall. This second road trip the boys didn't let me near the steering wheel- I really didn't think I was that bad??
I had my first encounter with an Abo in the town centre- (aka Aborigini/local) - she pretty much charged at me head on. Asked me the time, and I couldn't say I didn't know as it's not very easy to hide a bright pink watch, so as I was telling her, she was grabbing my arm. I actually thought she might eat me! Then she said, "Give me a dollar". I ran away very quickly.
The majority of the time it was raining, 'Liquid Sunshine' the locals called it. And apparently the driest wet season Cairns has seen- don't know how as it didn't rain for only 3 of the 15 days I was there.
I enjoyed my two week stint in Cairns but as my family moved on, I felt it time for me to.. so i went to Magnetic Island and Im still going South.
Speak soon!
