Arrived in Hervey Bay on Wed 12 March. From here we would leave for Frazer Island for a 3 day safari. This was a self drive sand island trip. Frazer Island is the world's largest sand island. And so beautiful.
Met my group at 6pm night before- there was 11 of us in our group- 3 boys and 7 other girls. The boys were from Ireland, 2 Nialls and Adrian, 3 girls from London, Claudia, Katie and Rachel, 2 Finnish girls Iina and Lotta and 2 French girls Stephanie and Claire.
We got up at 6.30 am and collected our jeep. The Jeep was a 3 man seater at front and 8 man seater at back. From the garage we got all our camping gear, cooking utensils and all our food for the weekend. As well as a map and an itinery.
It was so exciting knowing that we would be free to roam the island as we wished and do whatever we wanted. The picture above is the exact views that we saw as we drove along the island.
We got a half hour ferry journey accross the ocean and drove on the sandy roads. We drove to Moheno wreck- a huge ship wreck hundreds of years old, and then drove near Basin Lake and walked about 30 mins the rest of the way. The weather was great for the whole 3 days. Had lunch nearby which consisted of 1 chicken drumstick each and some coleslaw. At this point we werent that impressed with the food.
Anyway we headed to K'Gari camp, an aboriginal camp where we set up our tents and cooked our dinner. Iina, Lotta abnd I cooked dinner that night, which was slices of beef, with mashed potato and peas and gravy. and actually delicious. Irish boys were not at all impressed with having to eat mashed potato from a packet... "my ma would have a heart attack." After dinner we sat around the camp fire drinking. There was 2 other groups there and one of them turned out to be Cora and Ronnie from Whitsundays! How mad is that.
There wasnt much light, the 'kitchen' lights went out about 9pm, and we had to use the torch to find the toilets. Oh one of the thing about Frazer Island is that it is full of Dingoes. Dingoes look like dogs, but they are wild wild animals. Not cute and not safe. But still knowing this, 6 of us decided to walk to the beach at about midnight in the pitch blackness of the night with one torch between us. It was 3 Irish Niall, Niall and Adrian and me, French girl Claire and Finish girl Iina. It was nice lying on the beach for a bit, then we went back, lost two of our crew, found out that 2 dingoes had been roaming the camp and finally went to sleep on the very uncomfortable floor.
Next day we did more driving, saw a few more lakes and beaches and to 'Champagne Pools' and again had lunch and dinner around the camp fire. I went to bed early this night. Last day we went to a couple more lakes, and one called Lake Mackenzie which was absolutely stunning. It felt like a beach. And finally home.
Was a great few days and I am a total camper girl! I didnt drive though, didnt feel safe enough having ten peoples lives in my hands.
Maybe next time...
