G'Day
Today has been a much more successful day than yesterday's efforts. As usual it started early and we were speeding down Stuart Highway towards the Adelaide River for our date with the crocs that inhabit the river. It is estimated that about 3000 live in the river systems around Darwin and once on the boat we could see why. They were popping up out of the water all over and this was the one boat we did not want to sink!!!!
The skipper assured us that if it did we were to just swim calmly to the riverbank. Yeah Right!!!
It was really nice to see the crocs in their natural habitat and they are so amazing and perfectly built to do what they do, eat people!!! (only Joking)
The biggest one that we saw on our 1 hour on the river was a male and at 5.3 metres(16ft ish) was not too be messed with, and he only had 1 full leg as the others had been taken while doing battle over the years!!!!
It was then onto Litchfield National Park (NP) and our first waterfall, Florence Falls which was OK but as the wet season has not kicked in totally it was still a trickle. Further back upstream where the waterfall originates is the Buley Rockhole, a series of 7 natuural spring pools which we spent an hour in. It's a great way to cool down and the water was so warm as well.
It was then onto our next swim stop at Wangi Falls where we went swimming and this was impressive again we spent a good hour here swimming and looking at the fruit bats and kites. Once out of the water we found out that it had freshwater crocs living in there but apparently we are too big to be eaten by them. But in the wet season when the creek fills up the saltys sometimes get in there!!!!!
As usual with these day trips the day had gone by so quickly but we still had time for the giant termite mounds. These were amazing and some stood at over 5.5 metres considering they grow on average 10 cm a year they were pretty old.
It was then a 1.5 hour drive back to Darwin where it started raining again and heavy. It really does pour down here when it rains. Tomorrow we are back on the bus at 11am for our 21 hour trip down through the centre of Oz to Alice Springs to get ready for our 3 day safari which starts on Monday at 5.30am!!!!!!
Lots of Love
M & M
