Hi guys today we have done a dog leg across the country from Dunedin on the East Coast up to Oamaru then West through Kurow to Omarama then up to Mt Cook. The drive was around 350km and our first stop was the Moeraki Boulders 80km outside Dunedin. They are nearly perfectly spherical and some have a circumference of over 13ft. They were formed on the seabed around 60 million years ago as lime salts accumulated around a hard core. Maori legend claims the boulders were the food baskets of the Araiteuru Canoe, the canoe was wrecked while gathering greenstone it is said that the Kumara (sweet potato) onboard became rough roocks and the baskets became the boulders. From here we drove west through several small towns and past Lake Aviemore and Benmore Dam before heading North to Mount Cook. The scenery was tremendous with lots to see the mountains and the lakes (Lake Pukaki) were turquoise in colour. We had hoped to see Mt Cook up close but the weather changed and the last 20km were pretty hairy with 120kph winds and rain. Pleased to say that we are tucked up at the hostel but underestimated how small this place was there are only 150 people and no supermarket and we have no food or drink for the evening. We might be having mustard and pesto for dinner!!!!
Kia Ora M & M
