After having boiled eggs for breakfast we left a wet Westport for the 100km drive to Greymouth, the biggest town on the West Coast. On the way we stopped at Punakaiki to see the Pancake rocks at Dolomite Point, these are limestone rock and mudstone that have been eroded away over many years and have formed various different shapes one of which is a hidden face and another is a fish!!!!
It was then only a short drive to our destination. We checked into the Global Villlage which is a really nice hostel then headed for Shantytown, this is an old 1860's mining town where we rode a steam train through the native bush. But the big draw here is that you can pan for gold which we did and found a few flakes each which they bottled up for us!!!!
As it was cold outside we headed back to the hostel where we took a sauna before having sirloin steak with roast veggies and peppercorn sauce which was marvellous.
