Today started out with lovely sunshine which was a change for the better so we headed of early to Otorohanga, which is a lovely town where we visited the kiwi house a conservation project which cares for and breeds endangered indigenous animals and birds. We saw two Kiwis which were amazing, much bigger than we expected and they looked almost fluffly so cute. We followed this with a visit to the Kea's and Kaka's members of the parrot family. Luck was with us today as we got there just in time to help out with the feeding of them, Marcus got to go in the Kea habitat and I got to feed the Kaka's which are now very rare in NZ.
This was a great place to visit we saw lots of different birds and lizards which are native to NZ. Following this we headed further south to the famous Waitomo glow worm caves. These were fantastic waitomo actually means water entering a whole in the ground. The caves are limestone and are full of amazing stalactites and stalagmites which are thousands of years old they look really other worldly totally amazing. After a wander around the main cave known as the Cathedral we headed to a very dark spot to see the glow worm feeding strings which were beautiful like a string of sparkling pearls. This particular glow worm is (arachnocampa luminosa) is unique to NZ too. We then headed on a silent boat ride through the spectacular glow worm grotto a cave which was pitch black and covered in these beautiful creatures all glowing like stars in the night. This was such an amazing experience it was like another world really enjoyable.
It's wonderful that everytime we have an experience like this we think we can't top it but we always seem to discover even more amazing things as we travel along.
We headed back to Hamilton via Cambridge a lovely little town but not at all like our Cambridge and here we are now enjoying a night in our motel with a movie - rock and roll!
