We spent the night in a canvas cabin, deep in the rainforest of Cape Tribulation. When we say rainforest, we mean that literally - it rained, and rained, and rained!! Then it rained some more. We tried to get up to Cape Tribulation town, but were stopped by a river crossing the road!! We thought it best not to risk being washed away into the croc-infested waters so had to turn back and head north instead, to Cooktown. The drive up was very scenic, we drove for miles without seeing anyone else, which was really nice. We also saw our first Kangaroo, which we got VERY excited about; doing a handbrake turn and stunt driving to try and get a photo!!
We arrived in Cooktown that evening and had a little drive around. It's a very small town and very quiet (although it's not tourist season, so we may have just been lucky). Cooktown is where Captain Cook landed when he 'discovered' Australia. We visited the museum, set in an old convent building, which was really good. It gave extracts from his diaries and has lots of information on Aboriginal people and Cooktown's history.
We then headed back south to Yungaburra, in the centre of the Tablelands. The rain, unfortuately, followed us down, so we haven't had chance to explore completely, but the village is very quaint!
