Today I woke up after sleeping for about an hour and a half, my bloodstreams only being half-filled with blood, the other half liquor. It was a rough morning to say the least. I did, however, make it down to breakfast on time and was ready for the next adventure (albeit with an unwashed face, in the clothes from the night before, and smelling like a brewery). This is what the last few weeks (months) of heavy drinking have prepared me for… game on!
Okay, it wasn't that bad. Ish. And the day was super interesting, so it was easy to put the ill feelings to the back of my mind. We had almost a two hour drive to this little town in the Italian countryside called Orvieto. It was amazingly beautiful, and dates back to the medieval times. There was an enormous church in this tiny town up on a hill. Unfortunately I couldn't go in because of the strict dress code and my scandalous attire (re: shorts that don't cover my knees. w****!). So while Dad and Marlene went through the church, Ian and I went on the hunt for a clean bathroom. Apparently those don't exist in this town. So we went looking through some little shops instead, and found it was such a cute little town. There were back alleys lined with flowers and beautiful shops, all filled with handmade things. If I had only won a few lotteries before I left Canada, I would have bought something from every shop. Instead, I took pictures of the things I liked best, like a handpainted cow clock.
We went for lunch at this random restaurant in the country, and it was BEAUTIFUL. The view was incredible, we could see Orvieto up on the hill from the patio. (Pictures in album) The restaurant was run by a mom and her two daughters, and one of the daughters (who didn't speak much English) was our server. They were all so sweet and friendly, and incredibly proud of their food. The food... if anyone knows me, they know I appreciate food most while heavily hungover. So you can imagine how positive I was that I was in heaven. The incredible views, the amazing food, a giant bottle of water, bright sunshine. That's whe way to rock a hangover.
Next we went to Bagnoregio, which we were told is known as "The Dying City", though we weren't sure why. Until we got there. This was another medieval town, built up on a hill. But it was a hill that could only be accessed by a long, thin walkway, and vehicles were not allowed anywhere near it. There are only twelve inhabitants of this town - all monks. It was an awesome sight. If I wasn't feeling "under the weather", I would've loved to walk down the long spooky path to the city. I just couldn't do it though.
For dinner we ate at a pub down the street from the hotel that had American food! All four of us had a cheeseburger and fries, apparently all a little homesick for our comfort foods.
