I found where I want to live now! Holy balls, so beautiful. Okay, let's start at the beginning of the day. The port in this area isn't big enough to get the cruise ship into, so we had to go from the cruise ship to these little "tender" boats that took us to the dock. The tenders were freaky cuz they're so small and they had so many of us jammed in there. Plus they're the boats that we'd have to evacuate into if anything serious was wrong with our cruise ship. Overall, a little unsettling. But we made it and got on our bus. We did a bus tour that winded (wound?) up roads that followed along a very steep mountainside. It was absolutely terrifying and I refused to look anywhere but the ground for about 40 minutes. But the views once we were up at the top were indescribable. I tried taking lots of pictures but I was also too scared to look out the window. This was the city of Amalfi. Effing beautiful. The water is an amazing color. We also passed by Mount Vesuvius on the way!
We headed to Sorrento next, where it absolutely poured rain on us. Not too bad in the bus, but when we were supposed to get out and start a walking tour, not so great. No ponchos or umbrellas here! So we ran for our lives, getting soaked, and found the shop that was next on the itinerary. They took us to this in-laid wood shop that was so cool! I guess its this rare form of art/woodwork that's really popular in this region. My dad and Marlene brought me a souvenir from here last time they were in Italy, but it didn't mean much at the time, beyond looking nice. Getting to watch an explanation of the amount of work that goes into these pieces made it mean a lot more. While my dad and Marlene were buying a tablecloth, Ian and I snuck away and bought my dad a wood piece with the scenery of Sorrento as a birthday present, which is tomorrow.
I don't want to talk about lunch much, beyond mentioning that the iced tea I drank was the best I've ever had in my life. Sorrento is also well known for its lemon crops, and oh my God. They had crushed ice and fresh lemon juice in there, it was AH! MAY! ZING!
For the drive back, we took a different route that brought us fully around the peninsula. This drive was even more amazing, well known as the Amalfi Drive. Holy crap, again, words don't do justice to the views from the amazing heights of the beautiful Mediterranean sea. (Personal record: just spelt Mediterranean right on the first try without spell check!) My new home will be located in one of the cities we passed through, called Positano. I took as many pictures as I could, because it's such a unique place. Because it's built essentially into the side of a mountain, the houses almost look like they're stacked ontop of each other. Very cool.
Headed back to the boat, showered all the humidity off, and went for dinner at the five star Asian restaurant on board, Red Ginger (shoutout to Mica). Omg this restaurant blew my mind. For starters we had tempura veggies, tempura shrimp, sushi rolls, edamame beans, and a "crispy duck and watermelon salad". I could've had three plates of everything and died happy. They also featured a bunch of different teas, so I had one that was the best tea ever. I went to bed fat and happy.
