After a morning jog along the lake front we headed to the local hype Fergburger where people queue forever to get a burger, we had decided we wanted to try one but didn't want to queue too long so grabbed one for breakfast when the queue was not too long. Turns out the Burgers were delicious and we were pleased with succumbing to the hype, also that having a burger for breakfast was pretty good!
Today we had pre booked a wine tasting tour that started with us being collected from the hotel by our guide and driver Robin. We then collected a group of 4 Americans before heading on our way to our first winery which was called chard farm where we did food pairing and explored how different foods react with different tastes and styles of wine. We then headed off into kawarau forge in Cromwell for a sharing lunch platter with matched wines at a winery and restaurant called Wild Earth. Next it was off to Bannockburn to sample the wines at Akarua before heading to the last winery which was called The Wooing Tree. This area of the country is famed for Pinot Noir so we sampled a lot of that and also some Riesling, Chardonnay and some Pinot Gris amongst others.
It had been a great day and we were about to head home, which should have been about an hour, but unfortunately there had been a serious road accident on the only direct road back to Queenstown and the road was therefore closed. This meant we had to head back round some of the mountains and through Wanaka adding another hour onto the journey. All was not lost as we had wanted to seeing the town of Wanaka anyway and it also meant we got to stop at the cute Cardrona hotel for a drink too! We were back in our hotel about 8pm so decided just to grab a take away pizza and drink some of the wine we had purchased that day, which was a white wine called blondie that was made entirely with Pinot noir grapes!
