When the curtains were opened this morning it became apparent as to why the ship was blasting it's horn every half hour during the night, it was pea soup outside. We had been due to reach Dunedin at around 0900 in the morning but at around 0815 we had stopped and were told we’d have to wait until the fog had gone. We got ready and headed up to the buffet, sat down out the back just as it cleared and we got a perfect view of our entry to the harbour. The scenery is amazing, really green and lush.
We had a bit of a wait getting of the ship as those with ship booked excursions that were in danger of running out of time were getting off first. We got off just in time to meet our coach for our city tour and a visit to the brewery. This was the only tour we had booked directly with the cruise company so it was quite easy to find our way to the correct coach etc.
The ship docks in Port Chalmers which is around 8 miles from Dunedin so we were given the opportunity to see a little bit of the surrounding area as we made our way to the city centre. The first stop was to Baldwin Street which is the steepest in the world, then to the railway station which is the most photographed building in New Zealand. After this we stopped at the Botanical gardens, which we weren’t overly fussed about so we went to get some crisps from the local supermarket instead!
That was about the extent of the city tour, other than the bus driver showing us where he went to school and where his daughters school was! The rest of the tour was spent in Speights beer brewery where we were held captive in one of the hottest, stuffiest building we have ever been in, whilst listening to far too much detail of how beer is made. The tour ended well though, with a visit to the brewery bar where we could help ourselves to their 6 different beers.
Before re boarding the ship, we spent a little time wandering around Port Chalmers, which was really cute and quaint. Oh, and we also got a pie.
A quick mango margarita in the sunset bar as we sailed away from Dunedin was followed by dinner in Blu. Mandy was tired and very full so we just went back to the room after dinner. This was much to Andrew’s disappointment as he had hoped to go to the Newly Weds game that was about to be played in one of the bars.
