The last two days in Sucre have been pretty chilled out during the day with interesting nights. On Friday, we went to the highly recommended El patio saltena restaurant to pick up some takeaway saltenas and return to the hostel. For anyone who hasn't tried a saltena, they are amazing and this is a fact. They are probably what we would call mini pasties at home with various choices of fillings from meat to chicken and vegetarian. Honestly they are class!!
For the rest of the day we basically sat around in the hostel courtyard and caught some sun. More on this later! On Friday night, we went to Cafe Amsterdam which was showing a film called The Devil's Miner. We crammed into a pretty tiny room and more and more people kept arriving. It ended up that there was about 20 people watching the film in a space big enough for 8 but it was cosy. I have to say that the film was pretty harrowing as it was about a 14 year old boy who has to provide for his family by working in the mines which have never heard of health and safety. It makes you realise how lucky we are to have the opportunities we do and I would advise anyone to google it if they get a chance. It's well worth a watch. We stayed in Cafe Amsterdam for the rest of the night where we had tea and a few more drinks. Again, Bolivia is delivering on being able to eat and drink out. We are far more sociable than Argentina and Brazil!
Saturday was an early start for me as I was up or the Newcastle match in the hope that I could watch it in the TV room in the hostel. Luckily it was on so I was sat there at half 7 trying to keep the noise down while we tried to beat Liverpool. After the match, we went back to the park to sit around and enjoy the fine weather. I've got to say that the sun feels much stronger than back at home which is probably a mixture of the altitude and proximity to the equator.
We were particularly looking forward to Saturday night as we had planned to go to a restaurant which had been recommended to us and was the no.1 restaurant on trip advisor. The name o the restaurant is Abis Patio. We went early, about 7pm, as we thought we might struggle to get a table but we needn't have worried. We got a seat out the back next to a huge table of Canadians. They immediately introduced themselves and got talking to us before we ordered our meals. Soon we were the only tables outside and Rick came over to sit on our table where we learned that they were in Sucre for a Racquetball tournament. We got talking for a while and enjoyed their company while they were inquisitive about our travels. Our meal arrived and it is right up there with the best meals we have had so far. The steak was perfect, medium rare, and we would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting. After finishing our meal, a couple of the Canadians went inside before one of the men came back out and said that he had paid for our meal for us!!! We couldn't believe it and in true English politeness, first said that he couldn't, he shouldn't and thanked him profusely. We really can't thank Jack who is the President of the Canadian Racquetball Association enough and Rick who is refereeing at the tournament enough for their generosity and interest in our travels. We plan to go to the tournament tomorrow cheer our Canadian brothers and sisters on!!! Beth then decided she wanted a brownie with ice cream and I don't think I've seen anyone's eyes light up so much when this was delivered to our table. The waitress brought two spoons but I'm not sure why as I wasn't getting a look in.
We returned to the hostel at around half 9 as we were both quite tired after the steak tea. After we had done the salt flat tour, we were both suffering quite badly with dry skin. Especially me on my face which hasn't been helped with the hot weather in Sucre. We bought some Nivea stuff 5 days ago which we believed was moisturiser. How wrong we were!!!!! I didn't really think it had been helping for the past few days so I thought I would check the translation on the bottle. It turns out we had bought 'Creme de Ducha' which infact means shower gel. So whilst I've been rubbing this into my face after a shower to try to moisturise my skin, I've actually been applying on shower gel to my extremely dry face. We are both idiots!!!!
