Our first day in Sucre was mainly spent exploring the city and getting used to where everything was located. As we are spending around 5 days here, this allows us the time to do this.
After breakfast in the hostel, we headed into the main plaza which was about 5 blocks away. One thing about South America is that the main cities always have a good main plaza!! We looked around and managed to see a marching band who were performing in the square. Beth went crazy and started taking close up pictures of the band member to their consternation. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants lining the main plaza and the square is pretty impressive. After picking up some saltenas for dinner, we discovered that most of the museums observe a siesta so we headed back to the hostel to have dinner and allow me to try and listen to the England game. Unfortunately I couldn't really listen to the game but managed to track the result and look forward to lying in the beach somewhere in June and July next year watching England play rubbish.
On Tuesday night we headed out for a Chinese. Yes a Chinese in Bolivia!! To be fair it was really nice and the portion sizes were right up my street. We then went to a bar to watch the second half of the Uruguay - Argentina game. Here we found that happy hour was on between 9 and 10pm. Beth and Natasha, the South African girl we are travelling with, ordered spirits to which there was a mixed response. Natasha ordered a Fernet Blanca which is one of the popular local drinks but is definitely an acquired taste. After finishing this between us we meandered back to the hostel dodging the thunderstorms and heavy rain.
On Wednesday, we decided to catch the museums either side of their siesta break. In the morning we went to The museum of Indigenous Art which was a lot better than I had expected. It displayed the art and history of the local people along with the obligatory remains of people discovered in a local cave from over 400 years ago. South American museums do like to show human remains. We then headed to the La Recoleta church which had great views over the city.
After more saltenas for dinner we then went to probably the strangest museum we have visited so far. It was called Musef Sucre and we when we went in we weren't sure exactly what it was about. We still aren't sure!! There were a load of very strange masks which seemed to be masks which are worn for various festivals around Bolivia. Think a mix between the joker from Batman, Freddy Kruger and random elephant trunks and you may have an idea. We kept expecting someone to jump out with a mask on to scare us but luckily or both our hearts this didnt happen. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take any photos. We then went to the Casa De La Libertad which is a building dating from the early 1600's and where much of the history of the foundation of Bolivia has taken place. We managed to latch onto a free English tour which was excellent and really helped to explain all of the information within the museum. We would definitely recommend this museum if anyone happens to be in Sucre (it's right in the main square).
On Wednesday night we went to a bar which was advertising that they were showing Scarface. Beth hadn't seen this before so I thought I would introduce her to it. After having an excellent burger for a ridiculously cheap price we went into the lounge and watched the film with several other English looking people. The verdict from Beth was that it was an excellent film and it filled up a night for free as our hostel owner have us a free voucher to watch the film. All in all it was a good night and something different to usual night.
