You start the drive at a small arty town called Pa'ia, that is full of galleries, surf and swimwear shops and restaurants. You see some amazing beaches, many of which are a good hike from the road down steep paths. There are lots of surfers, because they have the best, and most dangerous surf, in the whole of the island chain. There are cliffs that drop hundreds of feet into the ocean, rainforested slopes and a tropical paradise of bamboo, eucalyptus, mango and guava trees. And, lots of biting insects!
One of the trees, the Rainbow Eucalyptus, has a unique bark that appears to have been painted in shades of red, purple and green.
There is a botanical garden called The Garden of Eden, which was used in the opening scenes in Jurassic Park.
The Ke'anae Arboretum has all the trees and plants of the tropics in one place, and every biting insect on earth! The village was hit by a tsunami in in 1946 and only the church was left standing. Now they have huge warning sirens so, when it happens again, and it will, people will have time to move to higher ground.
There are various black sandy beaches and rocky outcrops that give you incredible views of the surf and coastline.
