Last day on Maui. Packed up and ready to fly to New York. Typing this in the airport. Didn't want to waste the day so decided to drive up to the top of the volcano. Haleakala is the largest dormant volcano in the world. It last erupted in the 1700s. Since then 3000ft have been eroded off the summit, which is now just over 10,000ft.

Quite a scary drive to the top. Sixteen miles of switch backs, blind bends and drops of hundreds of feet. Some barriers on lower slopes but once you get into the Park, the roads get narrower and steeper. Vegetation changes from rich pasture land and forests, to barren lava rocks at the summit, where there is a Space Observatory.

You can see the cinder cones of previous eruptions in the "caldera".

On the way down drove through the cloud which was quite strange. Looked like a forest fire.
