Our last day on Big Island. August and Daiva were great hosts. They are both Lithuanian. Daiva has only been on the island for six years. She seems to miss home a lot, particularly the winters. There's something to be said for seasons.
Made an early start so we could explore the north of the island. The scenery changes dramatically. After driving past Kona airport, it is almost desert like, some lava flows from the 1800s and large splashes of green along the coast where they have built exclusive resorts and gated communities.
The north of the island is very different again, there are several microclimates on the island. You climb up to 3,500ft and stay to that height for miles, comparable to driving the Snake Pass. There are spectacular black cliffs that just drop hundreds of feet into the ocean.
The whole look of the place is very colonial. They even have a Union Jack on the state flag. I must investigate what influence the British had on the islands.
Anyway, after a marathon six hour journey, we made it to the airport and caught our flight to Maui. Only a short 45 minute hop across the ocean. Hardly got above the mountains!
