Lynda and Fred Travels
Up early after breakfast in room. We had a 8:15 start for a tour of PEI from port to Anne of Green Gables house. Lovely rolling hills scenery on way plus rugged ocean with red soil...we stopped at Rustico beach on way to Cavendish where Anne is...the government has reserved the house, garden, lovers lane and the haunted woods. PEI is an island now joined by bridge to mainland with 140,000 people. They did not want to join Canada but were forced to in 1873 cause they were in debt and could not afford to continue railway ...Canada promised them a bridge to mainland which eventually happened in 1997! Patience is a good thing! Pei is known for red soil and potatoes! Burger King world wide uses only PEI potatoes. Very prone to corrosion. PEI has a population of 140,000 of which 40,000 are in Charletown. They have no mountains or wild animals such as deer and moose! The island is 58 sq km or 1.4 million acres with 64 km shore to shore! Their main industries in order are agriculture, tourism and fishing. Crops rotate every three years...year one being vegetables - potatoe, corn, cabbage, cauliflower and recently soy beans....year two grains and year three hay. Japanese are great tourists and have fallen in love with Anne of green gables...even replicated house at Japan...they also take soy beans for export and also created a huge tourism industry by coming and getting married where Ann got married! They have 10,000 acres of muscles...big thing here....put socks on ropes... Minimum wage is $10 per hour and unemployment is high due to seasonal occupations. In 1849 it was prohibition...you could only get alcohol from a doctor with a script. Once home I tried to get my frozen ipad to work....after paying $200 and getting no results, and stand help to loan me his phone I finally gave up! I went for walk through town and enjoyed the board walk by the water as well as the little town centre. Then Fred and I decided to have an early dinner and show tonight. We went to the Italian which was nice for me and average for him! But a nice change. Then we went to show..tonight a singing and comedy show...hits from 60s, 70s, and 80s in a show where ex singers are an advertising agency! Back to cabin for earlyish nights!
