Lovewells vs The World
Today we had a farewell brunch with the newly wed couple (it went on for hours) and said goodbye to all our cousins from around the world. Then we trundled back over the Golden Gate Bridge again, to spent our last afternoon/night in the city of San Francisco. We spent the afternoon exploring Pier 39, Fishermans Wharf, which was very busy and full of tourists. We couldn't do our treasure hunt because there were too many people, and we couldn't ride the famous carousel because it was closed for renovation. But we did spend a long time watching the famous sea lions. They seal ions arrived after the 1989 earthquake, and so many of them came that the fishermen gave up and let them takeover the pier...now about 600 live here! They haul out of the water to sun themselves. But they are always fighting over the best spots, and clambering over each other... It was very funny to watch. We couldn't work out why they didn't just go on a platform with more free space! After a long time just watching them, we went to the marine centre to learn more about them. We learnt that they can hold their breath for 20 minutes, that they can swim at 22 miles per hour, and that different breeds of sea lion have totally different fur. We also learnt that they are endangered. Now we all want to help the seal Iions, because they're so unique. And yes, just a little bit smelly...
