Hi everyone!
Have had an amazing few days, didn't want to come back to Cairns, wanted to stay in Cape Tribulation forever!
Left for Cape Trib on Monday. Got picked up really early, at like 7am. Then went to Mossman Gorge, stopping off at some nice viewpoints on the way. The road from Cairns north is called Captain Cook Highway, and its supposed to be one of the most scenic drives in the world, and it was pretty spectacular! The area on the east coast north of Cairns is tropical, and its one of the only places in the world where the rainforest meets the sea.
Mossman Gorge was really nice, like a rainforest national park thing. We swam in the Mossman river, which was amazing! It was soooo clear, and the sun was shining and there were fishies and everything!
The tour guide we had for the first day was really good too, he told us lots of interesting things about the rainforest! I feel like an expert now haha! We stayed there in the river for an hour or two, and I didn't want to leave! It was beautiful, not sure if the photos really do it justice, it was like something out of a film!
Anyways, moved on from there to the Daintree River and did a river cruise there. Spent about an hour on the river searching for Crocodiles, and other wildlife stuff! Saw about 5 or 6 crocs, a couple of interesting birds, some small crocodiles and a few snakes hanging off the branches on to the water.
From there got the Daintree ferry from one side of the river to the other so that we could continue on to Cape Trib. Was a really good day! Stopped for lunch and some organic made icecream with weird and wonderful fruits! And arrived in PK's jungle village at about 4.30pm.
Pk's was where we were staying for 2 nights. It was good! I loved it, but I'm not sure everyone did! It was right in the middle of the rainforest, and there were lots of little animals wondering round to remind you of that! Everyone has been bitten by mossies, there were geckos and frogs and toads and cockroaches wondering round. And Ian had a HUGE spider hanging outside his little wooden hut thing! Apparently it had been there for months and not moved, but he wasn't happy! We founf out it was a golden orb spider, not venomous, but literally it was like the size of my face! Well, maybe not that big. It was about a good 10cm diameter though!
There was a nice pool there and a bar, so after we arrived I had a little wonder down to the beach (and the route to it goes over a swamp with mangroves which didn't give me a positive feeling about how good the beach was gonna be!), but the beach was AMAZING. Proper tropical beach! It was deserted, there were coconuts everywhere and palm trees. The rainforest was behind me, and that's all there was for miles.
The sea was perfectly blue further out, but wasn't too clear where it was washing up on the shore. Apperently that's because of the rainforest and the reef. Apperently the reason the great barrier reef can exist so well is because of the rainforest - every wet season the leafs and soil from the rainforest washes out into the sea and goes to the reef. The rainforest debris is really rich in nutrients and so the reef feeds off it. The reef also stops the sedement getting out to sea and acts as a barrier, so the water in shore is not as clear. It was still clear and nice, but not as much! And depending on where the tide was, there could be bits of rainforest everywhere on the shore line and in the sea.
The sea was really warm though which was a bit strange! After I went to the beach, we just chilled out in the pool and played games in the evening!
Had to be up early the next day for Jungle Surfing! It was really good fun, although it was a bit steep for $85. It was good, but not worth over 40 quid. I was the only person on the tour too, which was good in a way as it meant I had the two assistant people to myself, so they were telling me loads of stuff about the rainforest! And the one guy was English and had been in Aus for two years and was giving me fruit picking info!
Was good though. Then after that just chilled out on the beach all day, and did a night walk through the rainforest on the night. Didn't see as much as I was expecting. Loads of Huntsman spiders - they are only slightly venomous and they kill all the smaller venomous spiders. But, they're absolutely massive and hairy and horrible! They move so so fast as well which was even scarier! Saw a few lizards and toads, some crickets and a skink (like a chinchilla type thing but a bit smaller and more mouse like!)
Next day, did sea kayaking which was also amazing! Started out on one deserted beach, and paddled round the cape to the main beach I'd been on before. The way round was really really hard, as we were paddling against the current, my arms are still aching! Then we got out and climbed up the actual cape - the sticky out bit of land. Not a lot of people go up there, and there were amazing views from up there. It was stunning!
We had a bit of lunch and then paddled back round the other way. That was a lot easier as the tide was pushing us round. The way there I nearly gave up! We had to be attached to the leaders boat - not to pull us along, we were still paddling - but to keep us in the right direction as we kept going off! One boat capsized twice as well, but we were alright! Was with a guy called Andy and I'm so glad I didn't go in on my own! We had the option and we buddied up! Was all worth it though. Saw a turtle on the way back round too! It was amazing!
Then after that spent the day chilling by the pool, finished my first book! Then got back to Cairns last night. Its 34 degrees again today and I've been sitting in this bloody inet cafe for an hour sorting photos out - argh! It's been hotter than 30 every day thius week, it's bliss! Truely feel like I am travelling now!
I really really want to go up to Cape York more than ever though!
Doing my sky dive tomoro - eek! At mission beach, but gonna get droppped off back in Cairns so I can see if I can go up the coast from here! I'll let everyone know how I get on! Argh!XX
