Day 10 After our first night train we awoke at 6 tired from people leaving the train throughout the night and got ready to leave ourselves. We walked to the hostel and crashed out on the beds. We then got ready and walked around the ancient town. It is still enclosed by the city walls that were built 600 years ago, so many of the buildings were built around that time too, like stepping back in time! We bumped into one of the lads from our datong tour and found a noodle bar with him and some others. Proper noodles, they were cooking outrside and he made the noodles himself with everything thrown into a sizzling wok. The portions were massive and I manged to get to the bottom whereas Eve barely got to the brim of the bowl, Stuffed and satisfied, we walked around a bit more and headed back for a shower. We found a happy hour in a bar so had a a drink or two before bed.
Day 11 Eve woke up through the night not feeling great so we had an easy morning before going to get our train tickets. I tried some more street food for lunch- which was lovely, and went back so Eve could rest. We did some more research to pass time and then later walked around the city. Eve still not feeling too well we came back to the hostel to eat and relax.
Day 12 We woke up feeling much better, possibly due to the lack of noise outside! It is now Monday and our first day in Pingyao that isnt a weekend, and its sooo much quieter! We grabbed breakfast from a street vendor, I got sweet cakes and Eve got a savoury bread, which we were sure was sliced rock! So after throwing her 30p rock away we found somewhere else. Fried bread with egg inside with peanut butter and lettuce- divine! We walked around the city walls again- pretty sure we walked down every possible street now! After 30 minutes we found ourselves in the middle of a wedding. Cars decorated with banners and flowers, women on stage singing, food cooked in the street- the works! After many black looks had been thrown our way we dashed out only to find ourselves walking through another wedding with firecrackers going off above. So after all this excitement we headed back to the hostel. We had traditional Pingyao beef for tea which was just quite ordinary seasoned beef but still nice and then jumped in our free taxi to the train station.
