We went on the night bus from Penang to Kota Bharu. We were told it would take 12 hours from 9pm, so we expected to arrive at 9am the following morning. We actually arrived at 4am in the morning.
We couldn't get any sleep on the night bus because the air conditioning was set to the Baltic setting. Even though we were wearing trousers, shoes, jumpers, fleeces, and had blankets, we were still freezing.
We didn't have a plan for arriving at 4am in Kota Bahru.
When we were kicked off the bus I looked at the map and noticed that there was a good guesthouse 200 metres from the bus station. A taxi driver wanted to drive us to this guesthouse but we told him we could walk 200 metres. When he looked at the map he told us it was wrong: it wasn't 200 metres, it was 20 minutes drive in his taxi.
We ended up going on a 20 minute circular tour of Kota Bharu, and it turned out he didn't know where this guesthouse was. Kota Bharu isn't even a big place; the taxi drivers here are rubbish.
We spent one day in Kota Bharu.
We had lunch at a pasties and cakes shop. We had curry pasty, garlic sausage pasty, sausage pizza, cheese pizza, fizzy drinks, and cake.
We looked at both tourist attractions: the state mosque and the war museum. We still had 3 hours to spare before dinner.
Kota Bharu is the islamic capital of Malaysia and we only saw 2 other tourists including a girl from essex who looked like Jordan and thought that she was going to get murdered because she was wearing a low cut top.
Aidan.
