Getting up for the bus after 3 hours sleep and lack of sleep the two previous nights in the Everglades wasn't fun. However, I ran into Kim and Elina, two Dutch girls from the Everglades trip, on the bus. They were staying at the same place as me and were doing Fraser Island as well. After arriving at Rainbow beach we spent the afternoon relaxing on the beach.
The second day was relatively uneventful, particularly as it rained all day, so no beach for us! Instead I relaxed at the hostel and we had our safety briefing for the Fraser Island trip late afternoon. I wasn't put in the same group as Kim and Elina, but it was fine, as my group were great fun.
We set off from the hostel in the rain the next day, which wasn't ideal, but nevertheless we werent going to let it dampen our moods. I was nominated as first to drive and having never driven on sand before I was pretty nervous. However, I did pretty well and was the only one able to keep up with the lead driver! Our first stop, after a quick bite to eat, was a small lake. By this time it had stopped raining and we had a quick swim. Then in the evening we arrived at our camp; K'Gari Camp, equiped with a simple kitchen and "nightclub" (a hut with a sound system) and of course our tents.
The second day we went to Indian Head, a particularly significant place on Fraser Island, as it was where a lot of aboriginal people (women and children) were massacured when the men were taken as slaves. Then it was on to a freshwater creak for another swim.
The last day on Fraser we drove to Lake McKenzie, which was a much more difficult drive, us in the back got thrown around on the way up, but it was worth it! The lake was gorgeous! Then I got to drive back, impressing the lead driver with my driving skills! I was pretty chuffed about that.
Finally back at the hostel mid afternoon it was time for a long awaited shower and cider.
