I left Airlie Beach early, arriving in Ayr after midday. Then I was collected by the Yongala Dive shuttle and taken about 20-30minutes out of Ayr to a place called Alva Beach, in the middle of nowhere!! With little to do I spent the afternoon at the beach (poor by Australian standards, it was more like an English beach, just hotter).
That evening I was told the next days diving had been cancelled, due to the tractor breaking down and not being able to launch the boat. A little frustrating! Nevertheless I spent the evening drinking with the staff and Chris, a guy planning to dive the same day as me.
With nothing to do the next day either, we decided to have an "authentic" Aussie BBQ on the beach, shrimps and all!! Followed by a beach bonfire and songs from Chris and his guitar.
By the third day I was praying it would go ahead... And it did! We set off in the morning by boat, taking about 35 minutes to get to the site. I felt sea sick for the first time in my life! But the diving was totally worth it all. The Yongala did not disappoint. It was like swimming in an elaborate aquarium, I couldn't believe my eyes!! There were so many fish!! Both dives were phenomenal, I didn't want to get out. It was a shame I couldn't stay another day and dive there some more.
