Took the Denali Star train to Talkeetna today. A lovely 3 hour ride through beautiful countryside where I saw three moose- my first sighting of these peculiar beasts. Arrived in Talkeetna and was transported on the back of a lorry to the Talkeetna Roadhouse by the owner! I'm living above the museum and attended a talk by one of the park rangers who took us through a virtual climb of the highest mountain in the USA - Mt McKinley. It was a talk not to be missed! ...

Spent the day with geocaching pal 'Cavyguy' or aka Randy Cler. We found a number of caches and took a trip up the hill to get a great panorama of Anchorage and surrounding mountains. Finished off the day at the Sourdough mining company Restarant where I had the brisket and mash with superb gravy. Over the road was the chocolate shop with the biggest chocolate fountain in the world ? Unless you know otherwise!

Today's trip was to Liarville- a gold rush town where the prospectors got fleeced buying their provisions for their trek to the Yukon. Reporters decided not to undertake the dangerous journey and stayed in Liarville. There they invented the stories of how miners could just pick nuggets up off the ground. This accelerated the rush. Juneau the capital of Alaska is the third largest populated town. I started the day prospecting for gold and found 7 or 8 flakes worth around $2. Interesting panning for gold I Gould I had a knack for it. A salmon bake rewarded the hard and freezing fingers effort and a beer lubricated the throat nicely. The Star Princess arrived at our first Alaskan port of Ketchican where the locals put on a lumberjack show with log chopping, log sawing with single and two handed saws, log sawing with turbo racing chainsaws, log rolling duels and pole climbing with leg irons.
